One hoodie, a team order or a merch drop

Custom hoodie printing services and design tools, compared

A custom hoodie comes down to two choices: the tool you design it in and the service that prints it. This site compares both, in plain words, so you can see which one suits a single gift, a club order or a run of merch before you pay for it.

The line-up

Four ways a design gets onto a hoodie

The print method decides which designs work, how many hoodies make sense to order, and how the print feels once it is on the fabric. Pick it before the artwork is finished.

  1. Screen print

Ink pushed through a stencil, one screen for each colour. Setup takes time, so it suits a larger run of one design in a few flat colours.

  2. Direct to garment

An inkjet printer lays the design straight onto the fabric. It handles full colour and photos and suits small runs, and works best on cotton-rich hoodies.

  3. Embroidery

The design is stitched in thread. It suits a small chest logo or lettering and adds texture, but fine gradients and tiny text do not survive it.

  4. Heat transfer

The design is printed or cut on a film, then pressed on with heat. It suits names and numbers that change from one hoodie to the next.

Where it goes

Front, back, sleeve, hood

Each placement is a different size and shape of print area, and some services charge for each one separately.

  • Front

A full front print, or a small left-chest mark. The kangaroo pocket interrupts a large front design, so check where its seam falls.

  • Back

The largest flat area on a hoodie, and the usual home for a big graphic or a list of names.

  • Sleeve

A narrow strip running down the arm, suited to a word, a date or a small mark.

  • Hood

Curved and seamed, so most services keep it to small marks, or embroidery, if they print it at all.

Before the drop

What to settle before you order

The artwork is only part of it. These change the finished hoodie, and the price, as much as the design does.

  • Garment weight and fabric

Heavier fleece feels warmer and holds its shape; a lighter blend is easier to layer. Fabric also limits the print method: direct to garment wants cotton.

  • Sizing

Size charts differ between garment brands, so a large from one is not a large from another. Measure a hoodie you already own and compare.

  • Team and group orders

Many services set a minimum order, and screen print prices usually fall as the quantity rises. Collect sizes before you order, not after.

  • Print on demand merch

Each hoodie is printed when someone buys it, so there is no stock to hold. The price per hoodie is higher than a bulk run.

House rules

How comparisons here are written

Three rules every page on this site keeps to.

  • Words, not scores

A tool or a print service is described in words. There are no ratings, points or ranked tiers.

  • Prices carry a date

Where a price is quoted, it comes from the provider's own pricing page, with the date it was read.

  • Plain links

Links to Adobe Express, print services and other tools are ordinary links. This site earns no commission from them.

New here

Nothing is published here yet. Comparisons of hoodie design tools and print services will be added as they are written. Until then, the Who We Are page says who runs this site and what it covers.
